Hinata Hyūga

Hinata Hyūga  is a major supporting character of the series. She is a chūnin-level kunoichi of Konohagakure's Hyūga clan and a member of Team Kurenai.

Hinata is the eldest daughter of the Hyuga clan Hiashi Hyuga head and the eldest son, was the heir presumptive to the main house of the clan. However, he apparently lost this position to her younger sister Hanabi, as Hinata was deemed a failure by his father because of his lack of self-confidence.  When he was young, he was kidnapped by a head ninja Kumo, which, under the pretext of establishing a peace treaty with Konoha, had actually been sent there to steal the Byakugan. His father has killed the would-be kidnapper to save her, but Kumo demanded compensation in the form of Hiashi corpse due to sign a peace treaty with the village moments before. This ultimately led to the death of Hinata's uncle, Hizashi Hyuga, who sacrificed himself to protect his clan and the village.  This incident was particularly significant in the initial formation Hinata's relationship with his cousin, Neji Hyūga.

Because of his position as heir, Hiashi had high expectations for Hinata and subjected to real training. However, the slowness of Hinata and frailty disheartened her father until the end, which he considered a lost cause. Instead, the father chose to focus and develop Hinata's younger sister, who proved much more promising than Hinata, making her the new heiress. When Hinata joined Team 8, Hiashi had completely lost interest in Hinata, leaving her care and protection of Kurenai Yuhi. 

Hinata's strained relations with his father caused him to lose more confidence in herself and she often spent his time alone, crying. It was not until she met Naruto Uzumaki that her perception has changed dramatically. Because Naruto was treated as an outcast by almost everyone in the village, Hinata found herself able to relate with his desire to be recognized and praised. He was amazed that despite Naruto having nothing and no one to rely on, he never gave up believing that he could become something great like Hokage. In the anime, Naruto was at a point indicated protect Hinata tyrants. Despite Naruto not know, refused to let the kids insult and degrade her. While outnumbered, they beat him and knocked him out. Surprised by how much Naruto wanted to help and believe that it deserves to be acknowledged, Hinata was inspired. As Naruto, has finally decided to do his best to become strong and never give up, so that he could become well recognized. The admiration of Naruto later grew in love despite the warnings of her elders to stay away from him. 

Hinata is characterised as shy, thoughtful, serene, kind, and very polite, as noted from her always addressing people with proper honourifics. She is also very gentle, a trait that Neji and her father used to consider a flaw, and dislikes competing and fighting. She is shown to be incredibly empathetic, and, because of her upbringing, is one of the very first characters who identifies with Naruto's painful childhood and desire to be acknowledged.
